Climate change is a major challenge facing humanity in the 21st century. In order to actively address climate change and contribute to the global carbon neutrality goals, Tsinghua University established the Institute for Carbon Neutrality (ICON) on September 22, 2021.

The strengths and characteristics of ICON lie in integrating the Tsinghua University’s existing multidisciplinary advantages and research foundation in the carbon neutrality related fields, promoting collaborative innovation among industry, academia, and research, and rallying collective efforts to contribute to achieving carbon neutrality goals.

After the establishment, ICON has coordinated the efforts of relevant departments at Tsinghua University to address major scientific issues in the carbon neutrality field, planned four research directions in energy supply, energy utilization, system, and governance, established eight research centers, actively promoted interdisciplinary integration, advanced joint innovation across multiple departments and disciplines, and collaborated on key technological breakthroughs.

While consolidating the advantages of multiple disciplines and platforms, ICON continues to focus on talent development, promoting the interdisciplinary construction of “Science and Technology of Carbon Neutrality System” to meet the new requirements for high-level talent in achieving carbon neutrality goals.

Achieving carbon neutrality requires concerted efforts from governments, research institutions, enterprises, and society. ICON will continue to promote exchanges and cooperation with government agencies and domestic and international enterprises, conduct academic exchanges and technology dissemination activities, and comprehensively facilitate the achievement of carbon neutrality goals.

ICON is willing to work together with global peers and all sectors of society, and is committed to achieving carbon neutrality goals, making greater contributions to promoting global sustainable development, and building a better future for humanity.
