Supported by the Institute for Carbon Neutrality at Tsinghua University, the School of Environment at Tsinghua University, and the Administrative Center for China’s Agenda 21, the “2025 World Energy Sustainability Assessment Report: Focusing on the Impact of Global Shocks” was officially released.

Drawing on global energy development data from 2010 to 2022, the report conducts a systematic assessment of energy sustainability levels across 140 countries and regions. It establishes a comprehensive evaluation framework encompassing five key dimensions: energy accessibility, cleanliness, efficiency, affordability, and reliability. The report places special emphasis on analyzing how global shocks—specifically the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical conflicts—have impacted energy system operations and the transition process. Its ultimate goal is to provide a long-term, comparable evidence base for the global implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy).

The findings reveal that while global energy sustainability levels have continuously improved between 2010 and 2022, significant challenges remain. To meet the levels required for achieving SDG 7 by 2030, the global rate of improvement in energy sustainability must accelerate to 2.9 times the pace observed over the past decade. This underscores the urgent need to address the persistent hurdles facing the global energy transition.
